The tattooing process doesn’t end when you leave the studio. How you treat the area in the days and weeks after the tattoo is placed can impact the healing process and the final appearance of the tattoo after the skin has had time to heal.

While Markd Tattoo is able to assist with post-tattoo care, it’s also a good idea to be aware of the fundamentals before you go in. Quality aftercare can minimize irritation, keep the skin safe from damage and help the tattoo heal as smoothly as possible.

    Maintain clean and dry area.

A new tattoo is vulnerable and will require gentle care. As each tattoo artist may have different types of coverings or methods of healing, the first step is to follow the instructions.

After the covering is removed, the tattoo needs to be cleaned thoroughly with soap and lukewarm water. Do not scrub or use rough towels. Rubbing is often not the best idea; patting it dry with a clean towel will be safer.

Additionally, the tattoo should be avoided from contact with dirty surfaces, tight-fitting garments or other rubbing surfaces. A clean area may prove to be beneficial in healing the skin, while avoiding stress.

Avoid Picking or Scratching the Skin

Many tattoos are itchy during the healing process. Peeling or light scabs may also occur. This is distressing if you have a new tattoo, but is a natural part of the healing process.

It is important that you DO NOT scratch, pick or pull on the skin. This can prolong healing time and might cause the tattoo to heal in an unusual way.

If the area feels dry a little of the product recommended by your artist can help. Remember: too much product may cause problems, too!

For Markd Tattoo clients, always follow the directions provided for each tattoo, particularly if it is big or contains extensive colour work.

Stay Away From Pools and Strong Sun

It is important that fresh tattoos are not soaked in water during the healing process. Excessive exposure to water, such as swimming pools, spas, and long baths, can lead to skin irritation.

The tattoo will typically be fine as long as the tattoo is not scrubbed or kept under strong hot water for too long.

Avoid sun exposure is another thing to avoid. New tattooed skin might be more sensitive, and intense sun exposure may lead to additional irritation. After the tattoo is completely healed, using suncream to protect the color and to help it maintain its clarity for a longer duration is possible.

    Look For Indicators Of Concern

The most common experiences during the healing process of most tattoos are redness, light swelling, dryness and peeling. These are usually normal, particularly during the first several days.

If the pain worsens, there is significant swelling, heat, pus or redness that spreads from the area, however, medical attention may be required. When something doesn’t seem right, it’s best to consult.

Your tattoo artist should be able to advise you on what to expect during the normal healing process, but if you are having any sort of medical problem, you should seek advice from a health professional. If skin appears unusually sore or swollen, it’s best to take action early. After the tattoo, safeguard the area with bandages, a mask or a temporary covering.

Once the skin has looked normal, aftercare is not finished. People can also make a difference in the way your tattoo looks with long term care.

Moisturising the skin and applying sunscreen will help minimise fading from the sun. A healthy skin can also help to keep the tattoo looking cleaner over time.

Markd Tattoo is able to advise clients on the size, location and style of the tattoo. If you follow these instructions, you will be able to preserve the work and ensure a good healing outcome.

After the session, taking care of your skin is an investment in it, so it’s important. Simple practices during the healing process can keep the final appearance cleaner, sharper and more handsome for longer.
